More than half of Ukrainians have a positive attitude towards Austria, the share of negative assessments remains minimal - study

Austria maintains a mostly positive perception among Ukrainians: in August 2026, about 52.7% of respondents expressed a positive attitude towards the country, while only 2.7% expressed a negative one. At the same time, 41.7% of respondents take a neutral position, which remains a characteristic feature of Austria's perception, reports the information and analytical center Experts Club.

According to the results of the August survey, 15.3% of Ukrainians have a completely positive attitude towards Austria, mostly positive — 37.4%. 41.7% of respondents chose a neutral answer. For the most part, 2.3% evaluate the country negatively, only 0.4% completely negatively, another 2.9% could not decide.

Thus, the balance of positive and negative evaluations based on rounded indicators is about plus 50 percentage points. There are almost 20 times more positive responses than negative ones, but Austria differs from a number of other Western European states in having a much larger share of neutral attitudes.

Compared to March In 2026, the share of positive assessments slightly decreased. In the previous wave, 17.5% of respondents had a completely positive attitude towards Austria, 38.5% were mostly positive, that is, the total positive indicator was about 55.9%. A neutral position was held by 40.3% of respondents, and about 2.6% expressed a negative attitude.

So, in five months, the share of positive evaluations decreased by approximately 3.2 percentage points. — up to 52.7%. The share of negatives practically did not change — about 2.6% in March against 2.7% in August, while the neutral segment increased by 1.4 percentage points. The share of completely positive answers decreased most noticeably - from 17.5% to 15.3%.

This structure shows that a certain weakening of the positive indicator is not accompanied by the transition of a significant part of respondents to a negative attitude. The main alternative to a positive assessment of Austria remains a neutral position.

Director of the research company Active Group Oleksandr Pozniy, commenting on the attitude of Ukrainians towards Austria, previously drew attention to the combination of a positive image of the country with a large neutral group.

"Austria is traditionally perceived by Ukrainians as a European state with high social standards, cultural heritage and a stable political system. Although Austria is not Ukraine's main partner in foreign policy, the overall level of sympathy remains positive," Pozniy noted.

The current wave of research generally confirms this assessment: the negative segment remains very small, and changes occur primarily between positive and neutral responses. More than nine out of ten respondents have a positive or neutral attitude towards Austria.

The survey was conducted in August 2026 by the method of self-completion of online questionnaires in the SunFlowerSociology panel among 800 citizens of Ukraine aged 18 and over. The previous March wave also included 800 respondents; the sample was representative in terms of age, gender and region, the maximum theoretical error for indicators at the 50% level was ±3.5 percentage points.
