Ukraine’s metallurgical output falls 18.2%, energy production 16.7% in nine months

Ukrainian metallurgical production for January-September 2026 decreased by 18.2% compared to the same period last year, and the volume of production in the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sector fell by 16.7%, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (Derzhstat) reported on 3 November.

According to the published data, a significant reduction was also recorded in the production of coke and petroleum products - by 18.1%.
Meanwhile, the mining industry and quarrying showed a much smaller decline - by 0.2% compared to January-September 2025.

Negative dynamics in basic industrial sectors are observed against the backdrop of Russian attacks on industrial and energy infrastructure, energy supply restrictions, and the shutdown of some large industrial enterprises.
In particular, according to information from the association of enterprises 'Ukrmetallurgprom,' published on 9 October, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises reduced steel smelting by 19.8% compared to the same period last year - to 4.431 million tons in January-September 2026.

Iron production over this period decreased by 22.9%, to 4.463 million tons, and total rolled steel - by 23%, to 3.729 million tons.
Particularly significant reduction was observed in September. According to operational data from the industry association, only 131 thousand tons of steel were produced during the month compared to 277 thousand tons in August, that is, 52.7% less.

Iron production in September amounted to 113 thousand tons compared to 257.1 thousand tons in August, and rolled steel - 137 thousand tons compared to 269.5 thousand tons a month earlier.
Thus, in just one month, steel smelting, iron production, and rolled steel production were approximately halved.

The indicators presented by 'Ukrmetallurgprom' characterize the output of specific types of metallurgical products in tons, while Derzhstat calculates the industrial production index for a broader range of products of the corresponding type of economic activity.
The problems of the metallurgical industry are significant for related sectors of the Ukrainian economy, including iron ore mining, rail transport, energy, coke production, and the scrap metal market.

Reduction in steel smelting also limits the possibilities of exporting metal products and earning foreign exchange revenue from industry activities.
Overall, over nine months of 2026 industrial production in Ukraine decreased by 1.9%, and in September the decline accelerated to 9.2% year-on-year.

As reported, in 2025 the overall index of industrial production decreased by 1.7%, while in 2024 it increased by 4.7%.
State Statistics Service data do not include temporarily occupied territories and parts of territories where combat operations are ongoing or have taken place.
