Ukrainians’ debt to microfinance lenders grows 17% as lawsuits increase

Ukrainians' total debt to microfinance organizations (MFIs) as of 1 July 2026 reached 32.32 billion hryvnias, increasing since the beginning of the year by 17%, or by 4.7 billion hryvnias. Meanwhile, in 2026 the number of lawsuits initiated by the largest participants in the microcredit market significantly increased, according to data from the analytical service 'OpenDatabot,' published on 1 September and 28 October.

According to the statistics of the National Bank of Ukraine, in the first half of 2026 the population concluded 4 196 309 agreements with microfinance organizations for a total amount of 37.5 billion hryvnias.

At the same time, the number of issued loans did not change significantly compared to the previous year and amounted to approximately 700 thousand agreements per month.

The main change is related to the increase in the average loan size.

In the second quarter of 2026 it reached 9 170 hryvnias compared to approximately 6 290 hryvnias for the same period of 2025. Thus, the average microloan increased by nearly one and a half times.

Meanwhile, the total debt of the population to MFIs continued to grow.

By the end of 2022 the debt on microloans amounted to approximately 8 billion hryvnias. However, starting from 2023 this indicator began to grow, and by the middle of 2026 it exceeded 32 billion hryvnias.

Growth in lending volumes is accompanied by increased revenues of the largest microfinance companies.

According to «OpenDatabot», the combined income of the ten largest MFIs in Ukraine for January–June 2026 was 12.78 billion UAH, and their combined profit was 1.16 billion UAH.

The top spot by revenue was taken by «Ukr Kredit Finans», operating under the CreditKasa brand, with a figure of 1.99 billion UAH. The company's profit amounted to 172.6 million UAH.

The second spot by revenue among MFIs was taken by the company «E Groshi» — 1.85 billion UAH, and the third by «Spozhyvchyi Tsentr», operating under the «ShvidkoGroshi» brand, with 1.52 billion UAH.

Meanwhile, it was «Spozhyvchyi Tsentr» that became the most profitable company in the top ten MFIs with a result of 361.3 million UAH for the first half of the year.

According to the rating of corporate borrowers published 28 October, «Ukr Kredit Finans» simultaneously holds the top spot in Ukraine for the number of new lawsuits.

For the incomplete 2026 80 421 case opened against approximately 23 thousand for the entire 2025.

«Spozhyvchyi Tsentr» holds the second spot with 68 076 cases, which is 36 % more than for the full previous year.

Thus, two companies that are among the largest participants in the microcredit market in terms of financial indicators have also become leaders in the number of court appeals.

Judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine Vasyl Krat associates the large number of credit disputes, in particular, with the absence of a full-fledged out-of-court mechanism that would simultaneously ensure the collection of lawful debt and protect citizens from excessive interest rates.

He also draws attention to the financial difficulties of the population in the context of full-scale war, when the loss of income and property increases the need for short-term loans but at the same time limits the possibilities of their repayment.

At the same time, debt indicators and the number of court cases cannot be directly equated.

The statistics of MFIs reflect the aggregate financial obligations of borrowers as of a certain date, while the rating of corporate plaintiffs takes into account the number of open court cases. It does not contain data on the size of claims, their satisfaction, and the amounts actually collected.

Moreover, the study does not establish a direct causal relationship between the growth of debt to MFIs and the number of lawsuits filed by specific companies.

At the same time, the combination of an increase in the average size of microloans, the aggregate debt of the population, and the judicial activity of creditors indicates the growing significance of the problem of consumer indebtedness for the financial market of Ukraine.

Microfinance organizations are participants in the non-bank financial market and primarily provide the population with short-term consumer loans. Their activities are regulated and supervised by the National Bank of Ukraine.
