Barley production in Ukraine rises 23.2% to 6.6 million tonnes

As reported by Open4Business, Ukrainian agrarians had harvested 41.7 million tonnes of cereals and pulses from an area of 8.32 million ha as of 27 October 2026, or 72% of forecasted sown areas. The average yield reached 50.2 centners/ha compared to 45.8 centners/ha last year, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine reported.

Thus, the yield of cereals increased by approximately 9.6%, which allowed compensating for the lag in the pace of harvesting some late crops.

For comparison: as of 31 October 2025 agrarians had harvested 40.20 million tonnes of grain from 8.77 million ha, or 76% of the area. When comparing the indicators, it is necessary to take into account the difference in reporting dates.

According to the ministry's data, harvesting of wheat, barley, and peas has been fully completed in Ukraine.

The gross yield of wheat amounted to 26.24 million tonnes from an area of 5.12 million ha, which is 15.2% higher than the figure for last year, when 22.78 million tonnes were harvested. The average yield increased from 45.1 to 51.2 centners/ha, or by 13.6%.

The barley harvest increased by 23.2% — from 5.36 million to 6.60 million tonnes. At the same time, the harvested area increased by 9.8% — to 1.48 million ha, and the yield increased from 39.7 to 44.5 centners/ha.

An even more significant increase was recorded for peas. Its production reached 833.6 thousand tonnes compared to 660.7 thousand tonnes last year, increasing by 26.2%.

Sown areas under peas increased by 11.4 %, to 302.2 thousand ha, and the average yield was 27.6 centners/ha compared to 24.4 centners/ha the previous year.

Thus, the increase in the production of the three main early grain and legume crops was ensured by both an increase in yield and the expansion of certain sown areas.

Meanwhile, corn harvesting remains at a relatively early stage. As of 27 October, farmers have threshed only 29 % of the projected areas, harvesting 7.89 million tons of this crop.

The further dynamics of the total grain harvest in 2026 will to a large extent depend on the results of corn harvesting, which remains one of the main export crops of Ukraine.

Ukraine is among the world's major grain producers and exporters. Wheat and corn make up a significant portion of the country's agricultural exports, while barley and peas are supplied to both the domestic market and foreign buyers.
