Bilingual art book "Bread. Ukraine. Almanac" about the history and culture of Ukrainian bread

In Ukraine, after several years of work, the publication "Bread. Ukraine. Almanac" is a bilingual informational and historical artbook dedicated to Ukrainian bread, its role in history, culture, everyday life and the modern food industry.

At the heart of the publication is an attempt to show that the concept of Ukrainian bread is much broader than the usual product on the everyday table. For some, it is the taste of childhood and a family recipe, for others it is palyanitsa, regional pastries or bread from a local bakery. At the same time, behind these familiar images are the history of the development of agriculture, milling and baking, folk traditions and the modern large food industry.

The almanac traces how bread accompanied Ukraine and Ukrainians in different historical periods. It was preserved in family memory and rituals, became an image in cinema, poetry, photography and other forms of art, and with the development of industry it turned into an important part of a large production complex.

A special place in the publication is occupied by dramatic pages of Ukrainian history. The authors refer to the Holodomor tragedy, during which bread became a symbol of the very right of man to life. It acquired a new symbolic meaning after the start of a full-scale war. One of the most famous examples was the word "palyanytsia", which in 2022 turned into a kind of linguistic marker of Ukrainian identity.

At the same time, "Bread. Ukraine. Almanac" tells not only about the past. Considerable attention is paid to modern baking, craft technologies, regional traditions and industry development. Bread appears in the book simultaneously as an everyday product, a cultural phenomenon, the result of the work of the agricultural and food sectors, and part of the country's economic history. bread". The book is built as a collection of different plots, each of which opens a separate part of this topic - from old mills and family recipes to industrial bakeries, modern technologies and artistic interpretation of bread.
This approach leaves the reader space for further acquaintance with the topic: after one material you can turn to an old Ukrainian film, after another - study in more detail regional baking, the history of milling, traditional technologies or modern Ukrainian bread baking

"Bread. Ukraine. Almanac" is prepared in Ukrainian and English, therefore it is aimed not only at Ukrainian, but also at an international audience. The publication can be used as a presentation book about Ukraine, its history, gastronomic culture and one of the most important industries for the country.
The almanac is designed as a modern collectible art book. A distinctive color scheme, non-standard layout, archival and modern visual materials form a separate visual language of the publication and emphasize its gift character.

The premiere of the almanac took place during the Baking Awards 2026. The publication was presented by the President of the All-Ukrainian Association of Bakers, Yuriy Duchenko, and the director of the "Flour Mills of Ukraine" Union, Rodion Rybchynskyi.

The circulation of "Bread. Ukraine. Almanac" is limited. Detailed information about the publication and the possibility of ordering are presented on the official website of "Bread. Ukraine".

Partners of the "Bread. Ukraine. Almanac" became the All-Ukrainian Association of Bakers and the Union of "Flour Mills of Ukraine". Branch organizations unite enterprises of the baking and flour industry of Ukraine and work on the development of the domestic market, increasing the competitiveness of Ukrainian products and expanding its presence abroad. Among the areas of their activity are the strengthening of Ukraine's export potential, the promotion of Ukrainian flour, bakery and other grain processing products on foreign markets, the development of international contacts and the participation of Ukrainian producers in relevant international events.
