Winter grain planting in Ukraine lags behind last year’s pace

As of 4 November 2026 Ukrainian farmers have sown winter cereals on 4.448 million ha, which is 400.3 thousand ha, or 8.3%, less than on the corresponding date last year, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine reported.

According to the agency, overall 85.4% of the projected area for winter cereals has been sown, which amounts to approximately 5.21 million ha.

The largest reductions were in winter wheat and barley sowing. Specifically, wheat and triticale have been sown on 3.953 million ha, or 87.1% of the projection. This is 350.5 thousand ha, or 8.1%, less compared to the same date in 2025.

Winter barley has been sown on 420.5 thousand ha, which is only 70.8% of the projected area. Compared to last year, its sowing has decreased by 58.2 thousand ha, or 12.1%.

Meanwhile, the area under winter rye has increased by 12.7%, to 74.3 thousand ha. Farmers have already completed 96.9% of the projection for this crop.

The pace of cereal sowing has slowed over the past few weeks. From 28 October to 4 November, the area increased by 234.6 thousand ha, whereas the previous week saw an increase of 285.3 thousand ha, and the week before that - 536.8 thousand ha.

Thus, the weekly increase in cereal sowing has decreased by 17.8%, and compared to the two-week-old figure - by more than twice.

Overall, farmers have approximately 763 thousand ha of winter cereals left to sow to meet the projection, including roughly 588 thousand ha of wheat and triticale and 173 thousand ha of barley.

On the corresponding date in 2025 Ukrainian farmers had sown 4.848 million ha of winter cereals. Then, wheat sowing amounted to 4.304 million ha, barley - 478.7 thousand ha, rye - 65.9 thousand ha.

The current figures characterize the progress of the autumn sowing campaign for the 2027 harvest. The final area of winter cereals will depend on the completion of fieldwork, and the future harvest - also on the overwintering of the crops and weather conditions in the spring.
